ABOUT THE HOSPITAL

Operating since 1912, this hospital in Belagavi district (formerly known as Belgaum) is a tertiary care facility for leprosy. It has been equipped with a new pathology lab and therapy equipment to provide the best leprosy services, including ulcer care and management of leprosy complications, and Reconstructive surgeries are done.

Outpatient Care

  • 4,091 OPD consultations provided, with 18% for leprosy.

Inpatient Care

The hospital has a 20-bedded (15 for leprosy and 5 for general) inpatient wing and provides the best inpatient facility with 24-hour nursing care and the latest equipment.

  • 163 patients were admitted, of whom 95% had leprosy.
  • 2,348 beds were utilised, of which 93% were for leprosy.

Surgery

  • 100 rehabilitation surgeries were done.
  • 1 general surgery was done.

Support services (lab tests; X-ray, ECG, counselling)

  • 1,853 lab tests, including 58 skin smear examinations and 1,795 other tests, were done.
  • 117 patients counselled.

Prevention of impairment and disability (POID) in leprosy

The hospital provides patient education, physiotherapy, prefabricated splints, and MCR protective footwear to leprosy patients to prevent impairment and disability.

  • 11 leprosy patients diagnosed with reaction/neuritis were given inpatient treatment.
  • 47 leprosy patients admitted for ulcer management.
  • 78 pairs of MCR protective footwear manufactured and supplied to hospital patients and government/others.

Community Outreach

The hospital has a community outreach programme in schools and tribal villages. This is done through networking with the government and other NGOs. The hospital supports people affected by leprosy and members of marginalised communities and tribal’s in accessing government social welfare schemes for education, economic development, healthcare, housing, insurance, livelihood pension, etc.

A total of 488 patients were seen through hospital outreach activities.
