ABOUT THE HOSPITAL

TLM Kolkata Hospital was established in the year 1986.

This hospital was set up by Rev. Premananda Ananth Nath Sen as a treatment centre for leprosy patients on a corner of a Christian cemetery in Kolkata. The Oxford Mission, which ran the clinic after the death of Rev. Sen, handed over the clinic to The Leprosy Mission Trust India, which had started a leprosy control unit in Kolkata in 1980, working from rented premises. The present hospital building was built in 1986. It is a government-recognised referral hospital for leprosy-related complications.

The facilities provided by the hospital include outpatient and inpatient services, operating theatre, laboratory, ECG and X-ray services, counselling, physiotherapy, pharmacy, MCR protective footwear, and artificial limbs.

Outpatient Care

• 8,431 OPD consultations provided, with 50% for leprosy.

Inpatient Care

The hospital has a 30-bedded (20 for leprosy and 10 for general) inpatient wing and provides the best inpatient facility with 24-hour nursing care and the latest equipment.

• 817 patients were admitted, of whom 64% were leprosy patients.
• 9635 beds were utilised, of which 97% were for leprosy.

Surgery

• 41 rehabilitation surgeries were done.
• 201 eye surgeries, including 200 cataract surgeries, were done.
• 0 general surgeries were done.

Support services (lab tests; X-ray, ECG, counselling)

• 4,029 lab tests, including 309 skin smear examinations and 3,720 other tests, were done.
• 190 ECGs were done.
• 813 patients counselled.

Prevention of impairment and disability (POID) in leprosy

The hospital provides patient education, physiotherapy, prefabricated splints, and MCR protective footwear, etc. to leprosy patients to prevent impairment and disability.

• 43 leprosy patients diagnosed with reaction/neuritis were given inpatient treatment.
• 250 leprosy patients were admitted for ulcer management, and 221 ulcer debridement procedures were done.
• 345 pairs of MCR protective footwear manufactured and supplied to hospital patients and government/others.

Community Outreach

The hospital has a community outreach programme in schools and tribal villages. This is done through networking with the government and other NGOs. The hospital supports people affected by leprosy and members of marginalised communities and tribes in accessing government social welfare schemes for education, economic development, healthcare, housing, insurance, livelihood pension, etc.

A total of 7,426 patients were seen through hospital outreach activities.
