TLM Naini Hospital
ABOUT THE HOSPITAL
The Leprosy Mission Hospital Naini was established as an asylum for those affected by leprosy in 1870. Col. E Hudson, who was the Superintendent of Naini Jail, was one of the founders of the asylum. While the hospital was formally established in 1870 as a home for those suffering from leprosy, its mission to serve the community began even earlier, predating the Allahabad Mutiny of 1857. This institution served as a home for leprosy patients who were abandoned by their families for the first few decades of its existence.
In 1903, Mr Sam Higginbottom, a missionary, took over from Col E Hudson and became the first Superintendent. Later, in 1905, The Leprosy Mission Trust India (then Mission to Lepers) took over the institution. It is one of the largest hospitals serving people affected by leprosy in India.
The Leprosy Mission’s Training unit at Naini offers various courses related to leprosy, including its epidemiology, recognising and referring potential cases, diagnosis and treatment approaches, management of leprosy reactions, prevention of disabilities, and public health interventions. The hospital also hosts TLM Institute of Health Sciences and Research (TIHSR), which provides courses such as the Bachelor of Physiotherapy.
The facilities provided by the hospital include outpatient and inpatient services, operating theatre, laboratory, ECG and X-ray services, counselling, physiotherapy, pharmacy, MCR protective footwear, and artificial limbs.
