The Union Cabinet has cleared The Personal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018, on August 1, 2018, seeking to amend the following Acts:
1) The Divorce Act, 1869
2) The Dissolution of Muslim Marriages Act, 1939
3) The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955
4) The Special Marriage Act, 1954
5) The Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights,” nevertheless, there remains a plethora of discriminatory laws and practices in India that make people affected by leprosy unequal citizens of the country – we have identified 119 laws and provisions in India discriminating against them.
The Global Disability Summit hosted by the UK Department for International Development (UK DFID), along with the International Disability Alliance, and the Government of Kenya, in London, UK, on July 24, 2018, has resulted in 170 ambitious commitments from all over the world to take action on stigma and discrimination against people with disabilities.
