The World Health Organization’s 2017 leprosy statistics are out

New Delhi:  The World Health Organization has released leprosy statistics for 2017. A total of 210,671 new cases were reported from 150 countries. There is a reduction of 3.4% (7,513 cases) cases from 2016.

– India topped the list, with 126,164 cases (59.89 per cent of the new cases)

– Brazil came second, with 26,875 cases (12.76 per cent)

– Indonesia came third, with 15,910 cases (7.55 per cent)

Other 11 countries that have reported more than 1,000 new cases are:
1) Bangladesh – 3,754 cases
2) DR Congo – 3,649
3) Nepal – 3,215
4) Ethiopia – 3,114
5) Nigeria – 2,447
6) Myanmar – 2,279
7) Tanzania – 1,936
8) Mozambique – 1,926
9) Philippines – 1,908
10) Sri Lanka – 1,877
11) Madagascar – 1,430
