Neeraj Kumar, a bright and cheerful 13-year-old boy from Bhalpahari village in Chhattisgarh, dreams of going back to school and playing with his friends. However, his journey took a difficult turn when he began experiencing severe joint pain, high fever, and ulcers earlier this year.

What began as an illness misdiagnosed by several doctors soon spiraled into a life-altering condition. For five long months, Neeraj’s parents, Gulab Singh and Urmila Bai, took him from one hospital to another, desperately searching for answers. His health worsened, and the young boy could no longer walk or attend school, missing out on the education he values deeply.

Of late Neeraj finally found the care he needed when he was admitted to Leprosy Mission Champa Hospital. There, he was diagnosed with leprosy, a condition further complicated by Type-II Reactions and painful ulcerating nodules. Tragically, his mother, Urmila Bai, was also found to be affected by leprosy during the family’s screening.

Despite the challenges, Neeraj remains resilient. His treatment requires ongoing hospital care, constant monitoring, and regular admissions, which place an immense financial burden on his family. His father, a daily wage laborer, and his mother, an Anganwadi worker, struggle to make ends meet while supporting Neeraj’s care.

As you are aware, we are a not-for-profit hospital that depends largely on charity to provide essential treatments to our patients. Most of our patients, like Neeraj, come from extremely marginalised circumstances and cannot afford treatment in private hospitals. It is also true that Leprosy treatments are not provided in most of the hospitals in India and The Leprosy Mission hospitals are almost unique in the comprehensive hospital healthcare provided to people affected by leprosy.
