Lakshmanan is just 14 years old, but he has already faced more challenges than most can imagine.

He lives in a small village in Kallakurichi with his parents, twin brother, and younger sister. His parents work tirelessly as construction laborers, earning less than 10,000 rupees a month to support the family. Life has never been easy for them, but Lakshmanan’s struggles took a heartbreaking turn when he was diagnosed with leprosy two years ago.

It all began when a medical camp at his school noticed hypopigmented patches on his forearm. He was referred to a hospital and started treatment; however, the disease had already left its mark. Lakshmanan developed a claw hand, a condition that made everyday tasks painful and difficult. For three long years, he endured not only the physical pain but also the emotional scars from being bullied by his friends who didn’t understand his condition. Their hurtful words stung more than the disease itself.

In December 2024, Lakshmanan’s grandfather was also diagnosed with leprosy, adding to the family’s burden. Despite everything, Lakshmanan never gave up. He dreams of becoming someone who can help others, just like the doctors and nurses who cared for him. He is currently in the 9th grade and loves going to school, but his claw hand makes him feel like an outsider.

This February, he feels hopeful for the first time in years. He can’t wait to return to school, play with his friends, and chase his dreams without fear or pain.

Doctors have started him on Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) to prevent the disease from spreading further. His wounds will heal soon, but he will need reconstructive surgery on his hand—an operation that can restore the strength he lost. Additionally, ulcer treatment will be required during his recovery, and he will spend much of this time in the hospital.

The Leprosy Mission Trust India is working tirelessly to change this situation. We provide medical care, surgeries, and rehabilitation to those affected by leprosy. We also educate communities to break the stigma surrounding the disease and ensure that no one has to suffer alone. But we cannot do this without your help.

Your donation can give someone like Lakshmanan a second chance at life. It can provide life-changing surgeries, medications, and support to families who have nowhere else to turn.

Leprosy has already taken away so much from him—his education, his friends, and the simple joys of being a child. But together, we can change his future.

Lakshmanan’s smile is a testament to his resilience. He is ready to embrace life again, and with your support, we can help many more like him. Together, we can heal not just bodies but also hearts.
