Bill introduced in Lok Sabha to remove leprosy as ground for divorce
NEW DELHI: Leprosy is all set to be removed as a ground for divorce from statute books in India.
Hon’ble Minister of State for Law, Shri P. P. Chaudhary today introduced the Personal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018 in Lok Sabha; the Bill seeks to amend the following five personal laws to strike down leprosy as a ground for seeking divorce:
1) The Divorce Act, 1869
2) The Dissolution of Muslim Marriages Act, 1939
3) The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955
4) The Special Marriage Act, 1954
5) The Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956
We applaud the government for taking this progressive step, which will play a crucial role in the long fight for restoring the dignity and equality for people affected by leprosy.
